Are you not entertained?: The parallel between blockbusters and startups

On the recommendation from my friend Raoul Bostrom, I'm currently reading Blockbusters, a book authored by HBS professor Anita Elberse about the strategies used by the entertainment industries to produce blockbusters - the hits that comprise a high percentage of total revenues.

It turns out this "tent-pole" strategy applies equally well to book publishing, football (Real Madrid and Bocca Juniors were mentioned), as well as music stars like Lady Gaga.

There are definitely lessons to be learned for startups. In a world where startups have to compete for consumer mindshare, companies have to become more focused on content-strategy and view themselves as entertainment products.
