Board meeting best-practices

I was in a board situation with a founder and their three other investors earlier in the week. We went through various issues - some challenging, most mostly operational - and it made me think about what are the key issues a good board advisor needs to contend with, and improve at. They include:

  • Reading and managing the room's personalities
  • Advocating for the company's best interests
  • Surfacing the right conversations and insights
  • Driving towards action and resolution

    Out of the four, I currently think the 1st is the most difficult and the 3rd and 4th the most necessary and important. At the end of the day, the board is there to drive the company forward, bottom line.
