Leveling up your co-pilot

I had a great chat with Dan Stuart, co-founder of Bidvine, about transitioning from a CEO role in one startup (GoNabit) to a CTO/Co-founder role in his current startup.

One of the main perks he mentioned about the difference in role was "I can focus on product."

It's great to have a team makeup where the CEO doesn't have to focus on product (and an ex-CEO does). Fred Wilson says the three things a CEO should focus on are:

  • sets the overall vision and strategy of the company communicates it to all stakeholders
  • recruits, hires, and retains the very best talent
  • makes sure there is always enough cash in the bank

Product isn't one of these things - and it shouldn't be. In the early days of a startup however, there is every reason for a CEO to have huge impact and vision for the product.

But not every company can afford to have an ex-CEO be solely focused on product. It's awesome thing to have if you can though.
