South East Asia thoughts - continued

We're now on the third leg of our tour in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. We just hosted a meetup at MaGIC, the government backed center.

From an anecdotal perspective, the conclusions have been:

  • Vietnam: lots of individual interest in AI/ML. Smart, hustling, developer talent. Hungry as hell.
  • Malaysia: more established startups already dabbling in AI/ML. Still early stage, but rather than individuals in Vietnam there were already teams
  • Thailand: not enough data on the actual teams since we didn't go to co-working spaces

Having reflected these thoughts with others in the SE Asia region, one conclusion came out about Singapore as more of a financial hub for the region. There is a strong correlation between a startup financial hub and a city's history of banking and financial services, like New York and London.
