For early stage companies, it is extremely critical to have team members that possess intelligences on two different dimensions. One is operational and the other adaptability.
Operational intelligence is knowing how to execute along a specific domain. That domain is critical to the startup's current operations and those operations are in turn critical to the startup's current existence. This intelligence is addressing the here and now.
Adaptability intelligence is having the ability to adapt to the current startup's needs, and the future, however uncertain it may be. It is an ability to decipher where the holes are currently and patch it up, and an awareness of the future and ability to adapt to it. This intelligence is more about building the future state of a startup into the current team roster. This intelligence is addressing the uncertain future.
Both are key to an early stage team. Both are needed to serve today and tomorrow's startup.
